This 16-day Grand Silk Road Odyssey is an epic journey tracing the ancient trade routes from the imperial heartland of China to the vibrant Central Asian crossroads of Kashgar. Starting in Xi'an, the historic eastern terminus of the Silk Road, the tour traverses diverse landscapes and cultures through Lanzhou and the Tibetan grasslands of Xiahe, to the desert gateways of Jiayuguan and Dunhuang, and into the oasis cities of Turpan and Kashgar in Xinjiang. It culminates with a journey along the Karakoram Highway to the high-altitude Pamir region. This comprehensive itinerary connects the profound historical, artistic, and religious legacies left by centuries of exchange between East and West.
What is special about this tour?
This tour offers an unparalleled, continent-spanning exploration of the Silk Road's most iconic sites. Its uniqueness lies in its incredible breadth, covering the Terracotta Army, the Tibetan Buddhist culture at Labrang Monastery, the frontier fortresses of the Great Wall, the Buddhist art treasury of the Mogao Caves, the ancient oasis ruins of Jiaohe and Gaochang, and the living Uyghur culture of Kashgar's bazaars. The journey combines multiple modes of transport—train, road, and bullet train—mirroring the connectivity of the ancient route itself, providing a deep and immersive historical narrative.
What to prepare?
Travel Documents: Ensure your passport and Chinese visa are valid for the entire duration. Note that travel to Tashkorgan requires a Border Permit, which your tour operator will arrange in advance.
Climate & Clothing: Pack for extreme variations. You will experience the heat of the Turpan Depression and the cold, high altitude of the Pamirs (Karakul Lake, ~3600m). Essential items include layered clothing, a warm jacket, a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes for extensive site visits.
Altitude & Health: Be mindful of altitude in Xiahe (~2900m) and Karakul Lake (~3600m). Ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and consult a doctor about altitude medication if needed. Bring personal medications and a basic first-aid kit.
Essentials: A high-quality reusable water bottle, moisturizer, lip balm (for dry climates), a power bank, and cash (RMB) for local markets and optional activities like camel rides are recommended.
Best time to visit
The optimal periods are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to early October). During these months, temperatures are generally mild and pleasant across all regions, from Xi'an to Kashgar. Summer (July-August) can be extremely hot in Turpan and Dunhuang but is lively. Late autumn and winter can be very cold, especially in the high-altitude areas and deserts, with potential for road closures in the Pamirs.
